Head Instructor: Juli Jayne JJ has been around horses for close to forty years and has combined her educational skills with her love of horses to create The Mounting Block. A graduate of SUNY Brockport, she taught first grade for three years before her marriage to Tom Jayne. JJ moved to the farm that would become The Mounting Block in 1975 and has been teaching riding ever since. She was a 4-H Leader in Monroe County and was actively involved in Mendon Pony Club while her daughter was a member. JJ believes strongly that children can learn self confidence and good judgement by being around horses. She has been in business for seven years, running lessons and summer camp. Assistant Instructor: Mary K. Jayne MJ has been riding and actively competing for over 20 years. She was a member of Mendon Pony Club for 10 years and competed at six United States Pony Club National Championships. She graduated after achieving her H-A rating and spent nine months training at Millbrook Equestrian Center in their British Horse Society approved program before attending Midway College in Lexington, Kentucky. While at college, MJ worked as an Equine Veterinary Technician at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital. In 2002, she commissioned as an officer in the United States Army and served four years on active duty. MJ now plans on returning to teach at The Mounting Block as she resumes her riding career. Facility Manager: Thomas Jayne Thomas Jayne taught art in the Fairport Central School District for over thirty years. As a retiree, he now manages the vehicles and maintenance projects for our facility. Tom wears many hats: he is our tractor repairman, fence-fixer, hay-baler, weed-chopper, and crisis averter. If you see him, shout a loud "hello." He's either on the tractor driving by you, or he's been on the tractor and can no longer hear you! Educational Consultant: Tierney McKee Tierney McKee began riding at the tender age of three. She was thoroughly trained by her Shetland pony, Dolly, who taught her how to fall and get on again until she had this skill mastered. Tierney's love and appreciation for horses has remained relatively stable, even as she pursued other life goals. Most recently, Tierney returned to SUNY Brockport to earn her teaching certification in Adolescence (grades 5-12) with an English/Language Arts concentration. She is employed full-time at Sodus High School, but serves as a consultant on the educational aspects of The Mounting Block's riding program. This includes creating developmentally-appropriate lessons, aimed at increasing each rider's skill and enjoyment on horseback -- and on the ground! |
